Obesity And Its Consequences

Obesity, a serious physical condition that we tend to care least about. Being obese is often wrongly interpreted as healthy in Indian society. However, obese can never be equal to healthy. Although obesity is often considered a physical condition, the effects of obesity go far beyond the weight and body composition of a person. Carrying excess body fat is associated with many different long-term health effects some of which are among the nation’s leading causes of premature death and is extremely serious. The more obese an individual is, the more likely he or she is to develop complications in his health. Obese people are always under the constant threat of being affected by several health issues. Individuals who are clinically obese have an elevated risk of health effects. Some of these are listed below. 1. Type 2 diabetes 2. Cardiovascular complications (this includes heart attack and stroke, among others) 3. High cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) 4. Heartburn/esophageal reflux 5. High blood pressure (hypertension) 6. Sleep apnea (obesity hypoventilation syndrome) 7. Leg swelling and blood clots 8. Gallstones 9. Joint pain, back pain, osteoarthritis, and other orthopedic problems 10. Fatty liver disease and/or cirrhosis 11. Pseudotumor cerebri 12. Shortness of breath 13. Cancers of the colon, gallbladder, breast, uterus, esophagus, prostate, cervix, or pancreas 14. Reproductive disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) 15. Skin infections 16. Stress incontinence Obesity can also be a threat to a person’s mental health and overall quality of life. Depression, anxiety, poor self-image, and loss of sexual desire are common psychological side effects of obesity. Moreover, individuals may experience prejudice and discrimination as a result carrying excess weight in their body.
